Allison finally lifted her gaze and acknowledged her. “Allison rke.”
“Allison rke… Huh?” Carole mused, reading the name on Allison’s badge. “What a lovely name. The moment Iid eyes on you, Allison, I knew we’d hit it off!” Carole’sughter rang out.
But then, as if on cue, she reached for the report Allison held, trying to take it with subtle finesse.
“So, how about this, Ms. rke? Why don’t you let me take this to Ken for you?” Her voice dripped with overzealous sweetness, her lips curving into a disarming smile.
Allison saw through the thin veneer of politeness and the quiet probing lurking beneath.
“Thank you, Miss Perry, but this report is crucial. I need to deliver it to Mr. Lloyd myself.”
Their eyes locked, and Allison maintained herposed demeanor.
Carole’s gaze dropped, her manicured nails tapping lightly on the table as she added nonchntly, “Alright, then we’ll wait together.”
Allison offered a perfunctory smile.
Though busy, she deftly typed a freshlyposed message on her phone.
A “ding” soon pierced the silence, a new message lighting up her screen. Allison nced at it.
Gordon, with a bunny profile picture, had sent: “Allison, I just used Cobweb to gather some rted information. We’ve preliminarily located the streets of Fleeinnd.” Another message followed, and Allison’s expression grew intensely focused as she read, her brows furrowing into a serious line.
Carole couldn’t resist chiming in. “Ms. rke, texting your boyfriend? Unlike me, who’s constantly being pressed by my family to marry — especially Ken! They want us to tie the knot as soon as possible.”
Her tone dripped with envy, though it came off as yful and sweet. “I hope I’m not bothering you, Ms. rke. I tend to be a chatterbox; I hope I’m not annoying?”
Once she finished reading, Allison replied calmly, “Not at all. Though I think you may have misunderstood, Miss Perry — I don’t have a boyfriend.”
Her distant yet polite tone revealed nothing butposure.
Carole froze, momentarily stunned. Her grip tightened on the table, dislodging a sparkling rhinestone that clinked onto the surface.
“Oh… In that case, would you like me to introduce you to someone?” Carole offered, her warm smile faltering slightly. “Consider it my way of making amends for my little slip of the tongue.”
Just then, the office door swung open with a resounding bang.
Ken strode in, tall andmanding, his presence filling the room. At the same moment, Allison shot Carole a nce, her eyes dancing with mischief. “Sure, why not?”
