Despite their grumbling, theyplied with his orders. After all, everyone knew Ken was a bit of a vtile madman. Turning off the power wasn’t out of character for him, and it still wouldn’t have been surprising if he’d destroyed it.
In the quiet master bedroom, Allison sat against the headboard, unable to fall asleep.
“Once Kinslee gets over her Alzheimer’s, I’ll finally have the information I need to track down my mother,” she said, initiating small talk with Ken as they waited for time to pass.
Her voice remained steady, and her expression calm as she spoke about her mother.
Ken hesitated for a moment, swallowing slightly before asking, “So, will you leave here once you find her, Ms. rke?”
“Most likely, yes,” she responded with certainty. Nothing could ever be more important to her than finding her mother.
His face grew somber, and for a brief second, he seemed sad. “I hope you find everything you’re looking for,” he muttered, his gaze shifting to the floor, where the candlelight cast their shadows.
Those shadows, tangled together in the soft glow, appeared to be embracing, though both knew it was only temporary.
Allison was someone who could never be tied down.
“If you ever need anything, just let me know. The entire Lloyd familywork is at your disposal,” Ken said, his voice softer now. His hand tightened into a fist as he added, “After all, you saved my life.”

If she hadn’t thrown the bomb away in time, he would have been killed. He owed her his life.
Allisonughed lightly. “And you saved me too. Otherwise, I’d be the one with serious injuries right now.” The thought of his mutted back, torn apart by the explosion’s debris, made her heart ache.
“You didn’t have to do that, Mr. Lloyd,” she said, her voice a mix of gratitude and guilt.
When she’d tossed the explosive, she had acted purely on instinct, trying to save Ken—and herself.
As for Ken? In fact, he could’ve chosen to do nothing and didn’t have to endanger himself, but he risked his life to shield her from the shrapnel.
She could still vividly picture the bloody scene by theke.
“I acted on instinct to protect myself, but you didn’t have to take the hit for me. Life is too precious, especially for people like us. You should know better than to risk it unnecessarily.”
Maybe it was thete hour, or perhaps theforting glow of the candlelight wrapping around them, but Allison found herself letting her guard down. She didn’t even realize that she was crossing a line until the words left her mouth.
She shouldn’t have asked that question. Some things were better left unsaid.
But she asked anyway.
She soon told herself it was fine.
